We're back!

Lyl and I had a great time in San Antonio, we got to spend a lot of quality time with my nephew, a member of the newest class of United States Air Force Airmen. It was neat to be able to tour the base, and even better to be able to take him out on the town. San Antonio is a really neat city, and we had a blast going back (we had taken a week long vacation around this time last year to San Antonio). The heat and humidity were horrid, but we managed to stave off severe sun burn. The entire week and weekend was absolutely wonderful, we had a great time despite, Jack.

So, I'd like to introduce you to Jack. Jack is a Garmin Nüvi 1300 GPS unit. Jack is a dipshit. I could have given better directions with a blindfold and a dartboard. There were numerous times where Jack would tell us to go one way, and later we find out that it was the exact *opposite* way that we should be going. He didn't do too well with addresses off of access roads of highways. Also Jack must have been terrorized as a child by driving on Interstate highways, as he would go well out of his way to avoid us utilizing them. Jack also liked the shadier side of town, as he frequently tried to get us turned around in some very scary looking neighborhoods. I think that Jack is having dreams of becoming a deep sea diver. I'm thinking of fulfilling his dream.

Anyway, Lyl and I are back from our trip, we'll more than likely miss the Monday raid as I have some late work I must take care of, and well she has to come and get me. After that look for us in a raid near you.

Where'd you go in San Antonio? I grew up there. I lived about halfway between Sea World and Fiesta Texas on Loop 1604.

Oh my, we are quite familiar with Loop 1604 now ;)
We were fairly close to Fiesta, TX I think, I know I saw several signs for it. We were mainly around the Lackland Air Force base, and we took a foray into the river walk area. Lyl and I had made a vacation around the same time last year, and stayed on the river walk. We've both fell in love with San Antonio as a nice vacation destination, though I think I'd like to see it in the winter some time. ;)

Yeah that riverwalk is a nice place. Every weekend while I was doing my AF cop training, some buddies and I would head there and sip on some margaritas. It was good times.

You were Security Forces? That's what my nephew went in for.

Jack was the butt of many of our jokes and the source of many cheering moments on our trip. Every time Jack got us to a place without getting us lost we would congratulate him. And just as a point here... us = my sister, her daughter, and myself. Kelebros was too cool to help us cheer on Jack.

We followed Brian's cues this weekend. He really just wanted to chill because he said it would be nice not to have to do anything for once in 8 weeks :) . So we went everywhere we could during his base leave at Lackland AFB. We went to the Riverwalk. We also went to a few shops because he needed a new phone, backpack, and a few other things. We of course took the kid to eat since he looked like a sting bean.... yum Magnolia Pancake House. But we spent at least 2 hours at our hotel each day he had a town pass just because he wanted to chill. He was also excited about getting back on the internet again so our internet access excited him.

We laughed at his stories and were impressed with how grow up our hard headed, stubborn, quick to anger, 18 year nephew had become in just 8 weeks. There were a lot of manners and "yes ma'ma" coming from him and I haven't seen that side of him in at least 5 years. But we also got to see some of the better qualities in him that I think we were all afraid he would lose, like his sense of humor. They haven't curbed his need to spend all his extra cash yet but I see that happening soon. He is artistic and help design some of the art work on his flight shirt. I wish I had gotten a picture of it to share with you guys. He had 3 pins instead of 2 because he got his marksmanship pin (I am not a proud aunt at all :P ) He started tech school today for security. He is hoping to go into forensics photography. Since he is in tech school now we should be able to communicate with him more. His MTI only let him call home 3 times and held back a lot of his letters from us.

Anyhow my proudness is coming out and causing me to write a novella. You guys have fun tonight and I think I shall be signing up for Siouz's raid tomorrow night.

Oh I'm so so sorry to hear of your lost.

Sadly those mannerisms that you spoke of Lyllyaan won't hold up for long in that career field. He'll be a good old foul mouthed/bad tempered/law breaking cop in no time. Just kidding...or am I?

Ok in all seriousness though SF can be a really great career field and I wish your nephew the best of luck in it. If he draws the short end for his command unit it could bring him down a little, but I have no doubt that he will meet some great and memorable friends. Some of my best friends were made there and some of my better memories. The camaraderie for cops is one of the best that I've seen in the AF followed closely by the civil engineers and firefighters since those three fields are probably the most militaristic fields in the AF and the rest seems to be run like a corporation.

A little advice for your nephew with his new career. EVERY opportunity that comes up, TAKE it. I don't care if it's something like helping with the squadron Halloween event. Cops have a pretty big population in the AF so that's a lot of people to get lost in the masses and that's a lot of people to compete for with new assignments and special tasks and training. So the more he gets his face out there the more that his supervisors have to write with for good performance reports and those are usually what are taken into consideration when it comes to these things since it would be unfeasible to speak with 1000 people when you only have one position for that post in Hawaii/Japan/Germany/California/Brazil/anywhere he could want to go.
